Welcome to the WICEN page

Here you will find important information relating to communications during a WICEN Event or Natural Disaster.

Our Club is part of the Western Downs Regional Council's Disaster Management Plan. We have the ability to provide communications support whenever the plan is activated, for example, during a natural disaster such as flooding, bushfires or cyclones. We also take part in their training events to better prepare our members for the real thing, if and when it happens. You can view W.D.R.C.'s Disaster Management Plan here.

During an event where WICEN is activated, these frequencies may be utilised. Events that may bring WICEN into action are: Major Flooding, Bushfires, Major Power Outages and Loss of conventional communication systems during a natural disaster.

At the discretion of our WICEN Officer, any or all of our repeaters may be utilised during a WICEN event. WICEN traffic on our repeaters or any frequency listed above takes precedence over general traffic.

Our next WICEN training event is: T.B.A.

WICEN
stands for Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network. WICEN consists of a number of state or territory based volunteer emergency communications service organisations whose members are primarily licensed amateur radio operators. Members are accredited to assist in emergency situations and are able to provide emergency and safety communications for other agencies when conventional communications networks fail or are inadequate. Emergency radio networks can be assembled quickly, taking advantage of both amateur radio frequencies and services and licensed non-amateur frequency allocations.

IARU ECF stands for International Amateur Radio Union Emergency Centre Frequency. Whilst WICEN frequencies are mainly for use within Australia, the IARU ECF frequencies are adopted in multiple countries around the world as a means of international contact during an emergency.
